The future of employer branding online

About 70% of all companies in Germany complain about the insufficiency of talent on the German job market. Mainly the lack of managment personnel and young professionals in the technical area. 46% of all employers found out that that the brand awareness is too low to differentiate from the competition. (30%)
For this reason an increasing amount of companies are using social media to create an employer brand.

According to the study „Employer attractivity – employer branding and talent supply 2010“ of the HR consulting company Hewitt Associates every second company works with a „employer branding budget“. 76% of the questioned companies increased this budget comparing to 2008. However budgets vary between 20.000 Euro to 300.000 Euro.
The study shows that many companies either don’t work with a strategy or don’t use the right plattforms. (For this reason we created Oxendo...!)
At the moment approximately 94% of all 20-40 year olds are using social networks, however only 13% of all companies use the latest technologies / matching plattforms. Interesting numbers, which will eventually lead to a modernisation of employer branding on social media plattforms. (Ok, here is some ruthless self-marketing: It already did – make sure to check out http://www.oxendo.com)

How to push your career with a strong personal brand

Individual users will find many functions to create attention for their personal brand on Oxendo. In this article we would like to show some of the effective ways to create a better online reputation and arouse the industries interest.
With the transparency given by the latest developments in social media, it is important to inform profile visitors on Oxendo about as many facets of  personality, qualification and education. This also includes non-professional attributes such as personal interests or social engagement. The more a person presents, the higher the chance to become one of the featured profiles on Oxendo’s starting page. This can have a remarkable impact on a users online reputation, especially since a „featured“ user profile will also be included in Oxendo’s search results.

How to get there:
The basic modules for a good personal brand on Oxendo are Career Timeline, Education Timeline, Skills and Brand Statement. To give potential employers the opportunity to get a good picture about the many characteristics we also recommend to use non professional modules such as interests, updates or social engagement.
One of the most important modules is the brand statement. As every company has a brand statement, we advise individual users to create a statement letting the world (and the future employer) know what they stand for, what their believes are and which main assets they would like to present. The brand statement will also be featured as meta-description on Google and the many social media sites when shared.
A great example on how to improve online reputation and create „brand awareness“ for the own brand was delivered by Stefan Ripperda. With his great personal brand on Oxendo he was featured on our starting page (http://www.oxendo.com) and one month later he is still high up in the search results on Google! You may check out his profile here http://www.oxendo.com/persons/stefanripperda

The equation is simple, but powerful:
Relevant content modules on your website & CV
+ Good profile picture
+ Good visibility settings
+ Good Brand Statement
= Good or featured personal brand on Oxendo

Good or featured personal brand on Oxendo = More profile visitors (from companies and search results) = Better online reputation = Higher chance of finding a matching position

University Branding

Germany’s schools and universities have to promote their master-degree programs in more effective ways. Demographic change and increasing international competition are asking for new marketing and PR strategies.
Alumnis of bachelor programs are having a hard time finding the fitting master programs. The websites of many schools offer low transparency – even cafeteria plans are easier to find than the content of the courses. Also a presentation of the school location and its attractions is missing in most cases. Websites remind of public authorities, but not the future of a students education.
With the Bologna Process and the Europe-wide implementation of bachelor and master programs schools need a more professional and targeted approach in order to reach students.
Only few German universities are equipped fort his Europe-wide (in parts world-wide) competition for master students.
Oxendo, a new German career platform now supports schools and universities when creating an brand online. Oxendo connects students, companies and universities. For the first time students will have the opportunity to be supported by companies during their studies.
For companies this concept is interesting, because they can present themselves at places where students visit daily – online on career and social media platforms!

Descriptive Qualities Worksheet

Now here is a descriptive qualities worksheet which I pulled out from a great book by Tim O'Brian titled "The Power of Personal Branding". This worksheet will support you when creating your personal brand. Dig out some good qualities about yourself, also write down your evidence, such as what you have accomplished so far.
I would like for you to write down your qualities and evidence. Here is an example:

The ultimate CV template for your personal brand

Do you hate working on your CV? Keeping all rules and standards can be complicated and time consuming.
Most of you already created multiple CV’s just by joining networks such as LinkedIn or Xing. So why do it all over again?
In addition most CV-standards are not up-to-date anymore. Nowadays a good CV should include  links to your social media profiles and published work on the web.
Since a CV is an important part of your personal brand you should be able to decide which colors and structure fits your brand best.
While working on our new Personal Branding/Employer Branding network Oxendo.com we asked ourselves how we could solve these problems when creating a CV online.
Our answer is a CV – automatically generated with the information you provide on Oxendo. On Oxendo you can select relevant (for your personal brand) modules and structure of your CV. Additionally you are able to choose design, layout and colors in order to create a visual identity for your brand!

How to create a perfect CV

While looking for the perfect CV -design-tools for OXENDO (www.oxendo.com) I found this interesting article in Spotlight magazine about things to consider when creating a CV.  The article does not only feature tips on format and style, but also what HR managers may read between the lines...

You are looking for a job, but so is everyone else. You might be the best candidate, but will your next employer know that? Before you are invited to a job interview, your CV will have to make a good first impression. Many large companies in Europe now use English as a working language, so its important to have your CV ready in English. This is also an opportunity to show that you have intercultural skills that may be critical to getting the joy you want.
As much as your CV says in black and white, it says just much between the lines. It offers clues about the kind of person you are, what your priorities are and how conscientiously you work.
Probably the most important thing to bear in mind when writing your CV is that it will be read by another person. This could be someone with whom you`ll be working closely; your boss at a small to medium-sized company; or it could be someone in a position of power, such as the head of the personnel department. Whoever that person is, he or she will decide whether or not you get invited to a job interview.
For that person, time is money: you may have only 15 seconds to make an impression. Here is how to do it.
1.    Do your homework: Find out about the company you are contacting and write your CV specifically for the job you want at that company. One tailored CV sent to five companies will get you further than a generic sounding CV sent to a hundred-
2.    Make your CV readable: Choose a font that is large enough, wired enough and not too decorative. Use generous margins. Put enough space between different elements. Fit everything on one or, at most, two pages.
3.    Remember that less is more: The reader must be able to find key information immediately. Choose the three things that best qualify you for the job, and emphasize them in your personal profile. (This point refers to the CV-options on Oxendo. Oxendo gives you the opportunity to create 3 keywords, so that you can be found by them on our system, as well as on all search engines)
4.    Avoid clichés: and vague language. Everyone claims to be highly motivated and hard-working. So don`t just say you are; prove you are. Your achievements, as listed in your CV and supporting documents, should leave no doubt.
5.    Write for you reader, not for yourself. John F. Kennedy said: “ask not what your company can do for you; ask what you can do for your company”. Employers don’t care that you are seeking new challenges, they want to know whether you can communicate, are good with figures and have ideas.
6.    Make the reader curious and eager to get to know you. What hidden skills do you have, whether relevant to the job or not, that will make you stand out from all the candidates? When the 100 applicants are reduced to five, you will be remembered as the man who cooks for homeless people or the woman who is lived in China. Such qualities show that you take the initiative, are a team player and finish what you start. Are you a worker or an asset? That’s the question that’s answered between the lines.

The perfect launch of your personal brand

If you want to speed up the process of creating personal brand equity, become addicted to:
1) being intentional &
2) changing habits

Being intentional:
A lot of people think that once they choose their brand, the rest automatically takes care of itself. This mindset has no application in the world of personal branding, where only doers excel.
If we want to leave the competition behind, we must be more intentional than they are when it comes to every detail of our personal brand. But what is intentionality? One example – if you are preparing for a meeting ask yourself – what do I hope to achieve in this meeting – what do I want to achieve with my presentation? Intentionality is not just having a great idea – it is also to pursue and implement that idea (before having a new one).
DEFINE THE OUTCOME and pursue it with preparation and implementation!!

Change:
Habits, communication style, attitude, etc. – there are many things we can work on. Once we took care of those personal changes, we should move on to supporting props like:
-    Websites & broschures (as mentioned we are working on a professional branding & carreer platform, which will allow its members to perfectly create a brand for themselves – for more questions about that, please leave a comment or contact me directly!!)
-    Office space
-    Systems improvements
Another effective tool is a 15-second commercial. How many times are we asked about what we do for a living. Make sure to create an answer which is different and interesting.
